Begin the Conversation

Request a confidential consultation

Tell us what is at stake. A partner — not an associate — will review your matter and respond within one business day. There is no fee, and no obligation to retain the firm.

What happens when you reach out

Your inquiry goes directly to the partner whose practice fits your matter. Before any substantive discussion, we run a conflicts check — so your information is protected from the first message.

  • Privileged from the start. Consultations are protected by attorney–client privilege even if you do not retain us.
  • A reply within one business day. Urgent matters are triaged the same day when you tell us they are time-sensitive.
  • Told plainly whether we fit. If your matter is better served elsewhere, we will say so — and point you in the right direction.

How an Engagement Works

From first contact to counsel

Four steps, the same for every client, whatever the matter.

Inquiry & Conflicts Check

You reach out. Before any substantive conversation, we confirm the firm has no conflict — protecting your information and ours. This usually takes under a day.

The Consultation

A partner spends up to an hour understanding your matter, the parties, and the timeline — then tells you candidly whether we are the right firm, what the engagement would involve, and what it would likely cost. No fee, no obligation.

Engagement Letter

If we proceed, you receive a written engagement letter setting out scope, the responsible partner, the fee structure, and the estimate. Nothing begins until you have it in hand and agree.

Representation

Work begins, led by the partner you met — not handed down. You receive regular updates, and you will never see a charge that was not explained to you first.

How Fees Are Structured

Priced in writing, before work begins

We use three arrangements. Which one fits depends on your matter — we will recommend the structure that serves you, not us, and quote it in the engagement letter.

Most engagements

Hourly, on Retainer

Billed against an initial retainer at the responsible attorney's hourly rate, with detailed monthly statements. Rates are disclosed up front; the retainer is replenished as work proceeds and any unused balance is returned.

Best for

Litigation, investigations, and matters whose scope cannot be fixed in advance.

Defined scope

Fixed Fee

A single agreed price for a clearly defined piece of work, quoted before we start. You know the full cost at the outset, with no meter running — ideal when the deliverable is well understood.

Best for

Estate plans, entity formations, and discrete transactional work.

Select matters

Contingency & Hybrid

For certain disputes we will discuss a contingent fee — we are paid a percentage only if we recover — or a hybrid that pairs a reduced hourly rate with a success component. We take these matters selectively and on their merits.

Best for

Recovery litigation where aligning our fee with your result makes sense.

Common Questions

Answered plainly

Is my inquiry confidential before I become a client?

Yes. Consultations are protected by attorney–client privilege even if you do not retain us, and we run a conflicts check before any substantive discussion — so your information is never at risk. We do ask that you hold back the most sensitive details until we confirm no conflict exists.

What happens at the first consultation?

A partner — not an associate — spends up to an hour understanding your matter, the parties involved, and the timeline. We then tell you candidly whether we are the right firm, what the engagement would look like, and what it would likely cost. There is no fee and no obligation.

How quickly will someone respond?

Within one business day. If you mark your matter urgent, we triage it the same day. For emergencies that cannot wait, telephone us directly at (212) 555-0187 during business hours.

How are fees determined for my matter?

After the consultation, the responsible partner recommends the arrangement — hourly, fixed, or contingency/hybrid — that best fits your matter, and sets it out in a written engagement letter with an estimate. You approve it before any work begins, and you will never see a charge we did not explain first.

Do you take matters outside New York?

Frequently. Our partners are admitted in five jurisdictions and before two federal circuits, and we associate with trusted local counsel elsewhere. Distance has never determined whether we take a matter; its seriousness has.
