Scout Goods · Our story

One dog broke everything. So we started over.

Scout Goods began in a garage in Bend, Oregon in 2019, because a Belgian Malinois named Rook went through eleven “indestructible” toys in fourteen months and we ran out of things to buy him.

How this started

We are two people who got tired of throwing money in the bin

Rook belonged to Dana, who runs our workshop. Between 2018 and 2019 she spent roughly $340 on chew toys marketed as indestructible. Eleven of them came apart. Two came apart in a way that cost an emergency vet visit and a very long night.

So we did the boring thing. We bought sample rubber from nine suppliers, molded nine identical balls in a friend’s shop in Ohio, and left them with Rook one at a time. Eight failed inside a week. The ninth is the Boulder, and it is still in his crate seven years later.

If a claim can’t survive one Malinois for a month, it isn’t a claim. It’s marketing.

Everything we have added since works the same way: it goes home with a real dog or cat, it stays there until it fails or clearly won’t, and only then does it get a page on this site. Nineteen products have failed that test and never shipped. We keep the list on the wall.

Today we are eleven people. Treats are dehydrated in one small kitchen off Highway 97; gear is molded and sewn by three partner workshops in Ohio, North Carolina and Portugal, all of whom we have visited and all of whom we name on the product page.

The short version

Seven years, in order

A real sequence, so it earns its numbers. Nothing else on this site is numbered.

2019

Garage, nine samples

The Boulder ships to 46 people, all of them friends. Four ask for a second one.

2021

The kitchen opens

We stop reselling other people’s treats and start dehydrating single-ingredient jerky ourselves.

2023

The chew guarantee

90 days, one replacement per product, no receipt hunt. We have honoured 2,180 of them.

2026

Eleven people, 228 products

Still one warehouse, still in Bend, still testing everything on somebody’s actual dog first.

Sourcing & safety

What we will and will not put in the box

Every treat is lot-coded and every material is third-party tested. This is the whole standard, not a summary of it.

Single-ingredient treats Beef round, sweet potato, wild Pacific salmon. Nothing sprayed on after drying. Always
Lot codes on every bag Scan it to see the exact day it was dried and the name of the person who packed it. Always
ISO 17025 material testing Rubber, webbing and glaze tested in Portland before a product goes on sale, then annually. Always
Named partner workshops Ohio, North Carolina and Portugal. Visited in person, audited on pay and hours. Always
Glycerin & propylene glycol Humectants that keep supermarket treats soft on a shelf for a year. Never
Red 40, BHA, corn syrup Colour and cheap bulk. They do nothing for a dog. Never
Rawhide Chemically stripped hide that swells in the gut. We will not sell it at any margin. Never

Full test reports are available on request — ask for the lot number and we send the PDF the same day.

The giving program

One in ten goes to a shelter

For every ten units of a product we sell, we send one to a shelter partner. Not a discount code, not a round-up at checkout — the actual product, on our freight account.

38,400 Toys, bowls and beds donated since the program started in 2021
112 Shelters and foster networks across 19 states
  • High Desert Humane Society — Bend, Oregon (our first partner, 2021)
  • Cascade Foster Network — 40 foster homes across central Oregon
  • Second Chance Cat Rescue — Boise, Idaho
  • Every quarter we publish what shipped where, down to the unit
