NocturneAtelier
Shop candles

The atelier · Est. 2019

We started because every candle we owned smelled like a shop.

Ines Aldarov was blending fragrance for someone else's brand and hating the brief: make it loud, make it read across a room, make it sell in eight seconds. Nocturne Atelier is the opposite instruction — a scent that behaves like a room does at 10pm, and only asks for your attention if you go looking for it.

How it went · Seven years

A hot plate, a spare room, and one stubborn rule.

The rule was never to sell a candle before it had cured. It cost us two Christmases and most of a wholesale account, and it is the only reason anyone reorders.

2019

Forty jars, one hot plate

Ines poured the first batch in a spare room in Sellwood, weighing oils on a kitchen scale. Thirty-one of the forty went to friends. The other nine sold at a Sunday market in November.

2021

The eleven-day rule

A batch shipped after four days' cure and came back cold — no throw, no scent past hour one. We tested every interval to twenty-one days. Eleven was where it stopped improving, and it has been eleven ever since.

2023

Division Street

We took a narrow room with a loading door and a concrete floor that holds 18°C in summer — the reason the cure shelves are here rather than anywhere prettier. The front eight metres became a shop on Thursdays.

2024

Stoneware, and the refill

We stopped buying imported glass and moved to hand-thrown stoneware from a studio four blocks away. Vessels come back to us; a refill is $18 rather than a new jar.

2026

Twelve pours, still 120 at a time

Twelve scents in rotation and a subscription that goes out every eight weeks. Batch size hasn't moved: 120 jars, because that's what two people can pour in a morning and still weigh to 0.1 g.

Materials · What's actually in it

Six things go in the jar. Here they all are.

No proprietary blends, no "fragrance" as a single line item. If we can't tell you where it comes from, it doesn't go in the wax.

01 · The wax

Coconut-soy

A 70/30 coconut-soy blend, both from US growers. It burns cooler and slower than paraffin, which is why a 9 oz jar gets 64 hours instead of 40.

No paraffin · No palm

02 · The wick

FSC birch

A single crackling wood wick, cut from FSC-certified birch in Wisconsin. Wood gives an even pool edge-to-edge; cotton wicks tunnelled in our stoneware.

Lead-free · Single wick

03 · The oils

Phthalate-free fragrance

Loaded at 9.5% — high enough to throw across a room, low enough not to soot. Blended in Grasse and New Jersey, weighed here to 0.1 g.

Phthalate-free · IFRA compliant

04 · The vessel

Hand-thrown stoneware

Thrown four blocks away, fired to 1,240°C. No two glazes land the same, which is a feature until you try to photograph twelve of them.

Returnable · $18 refill

05 · The box

Unbranded charcoal board

Recycled board, no plastic window, no printed price. A wax-sealed card goes in by hand — which is also why we can't ship same-day.

Recycled · Plastic-free

06 · The label

The full pyramid

Every label prints top, heart and base in order of volatility, plus the batch number and pour date. You can read what it becomes before you buy it.

Batch-stamped · Dated

Visit · SE Division St

The front eight metres are open Thursdays.

Come and smell all twelve before you commit to one — which is genuinely the only reliable way to buy a candle. The cure shelves are behind the counter, so you'll also see what eleven days actually looks like.

Wholesale · From 24 units

Stock us, if the room suits it.

We work with about forty shops — mostly independent homeware, florists and one very good bookshop. We're slow, we sell out, and we'd rather tell you that now than after you've built a display.
