(01) — The residents

Six hands.
Six separate books.

Each resident keeps their own book, quotes their own work and refuses their own enquiries. Two sit above the studio floor. One book is closed until June and says so rather than taking a deposit it cannot honour.

What follows is what each of them will take, what they will not, and how long the wait actually is. There are no photographs of finished work on this page, and that is deliberate — the reason is directly below.

(02) — Why there are no photographs here

We do not
show the work

Every tattoo on this floor was drawn for one person and one body part. Photographing it and hanging it on a website turns it into flash — something for the next person to point at and ask for. That is the opposite of what you are paying for here.

It also does not tell you anything useful. A gallery shows you what six artists have already done for other people; it cannot tell you whether your idea fits a hand, what it will cost, or when you can sit. So we publish that instead: specialism, what each resident refuses, the real rate and the real wait.

If you want to see finished work, ask at the consult. Every resident keeps a physical book in the studio and will walk you through it with the client’s permission — which is how it worked before websites and is still the only version we are comfortable with. We have turned work away for eleven years; we are not about to start advertising it.

Nadia opened the floor in 2015 with one chair and a rule she has never broken: the drawing is finished before the date is offered. Her work is large ornamental blackwork built to the body’s own geometry — sternums, spines, the outside of a thigh — and it is drawn in negative space as much as in ink.

She quotes above the studio floor and says so at the enquiry, not at the consult. Roughly one enquiry in four gets sent to another resident because the piece wants a different hand; she considers that part of the job rather than a lost booking.

Will take

  • Ornamental panels that wrap a limb or the torso
  • Blackwork over old, faded linework
  • Pieces booked as three or more consecutive days

Will not take

  • Anything smaller than a palm
  • Lettering or script as the main event
  • Designs copied from another artist’s photograph
If the drawing does not work on paper at the size it will be worn, it will not work on skin. I would rather lose the booking at week two than at year ten.

Solomon draws fine line and lettering, which is the hardest thing in the room to do honestly — thin work moves as skin ages, and he will tell you where and by how much before you sit rather than after. Script is set by hand, never typed out of a font file, and he sets it at the size it will be worn.

He is the resident most likely to talk you into something smaller than you asked for. He is also the only one who will refuse a placement on the grounds that the ink will not hold there in five years, which costs the studio money and is exactly why he is on the floor.

Will take

  • Hand-set lettering in Latin or Greek script
  • Single-session fine line under a palm in size
  • Sternum, forearm and upper-arm placements

Will not take

  • Fine line on hands, fingers, feet or ribs
  • White ink, which he does not offer at all
  • Matching pieces done on the same day for two people
Fine line is a promise about year ten, not about the afternoon. Anyone who will not talk to you about how it ages is selling you the afternoon.

Juno works neo-traditional: heavy outline, a closed palette, and shapes that stay legible from three metres away in ten years’ time. She trained in Bologna and still draws every piece on paper first, at scale, in graphite before anything is digitised.

Most first-timers at Ironhand end up in her chair, and she books a half day more often than anyone else on the floor. She will tell you plainly when a piece wants to be smaller and cheaper than you came in expecting.

Will take

  • Contained single-session pieces, half day or full
  • Classic subjects drawn without irony
  • First tattoos, which she takes seriously

Will not take

  • Photorealism or portraits of any kind
  • Colour packing over existing dark work
  • Pieces where the reference is another tattoo
A neo-traditional piece has to survive being seen badly — across a bar, in bad light, at a distance. That is the whole craft, and it is mostly about what you leave out.

Ash does large-scale blackout and heavy coverage — full sleeves, backs, and the kind of multi-day project that is booked as consecutive days across months rather than as a single appointment. Their book runs the longest on the floor because a single client can occupy eight days of it.

The book is closed until June and no deposit is taken while it is closed. You can join the waitlist and you will get a real date or a plain no — Ash does not carry an open-ended list, and anyone still on it after two rounds of dates is told so.

Will take

  • Full sleeves and back pieces across 4–10 days
  • Blackout over dense or failed existing work
  • Projects the client is willing to plan a year around

Will not take

  • Anything achievable in a single session
  • Blackout on hands, neck or face
  • Work started elsewhere that someone else must finish
A blackout is a decision about the rest of your arm, not about one afternoon. If you are not ready to plan a year around it, wait a year.

Théo works in an etching and engraving register — cross-hatch, stipple, and the line weights of a printing plate rather than of a tattoo. He came to the floor from ten years of intaglio printmaking and still cuts test plates for the larger pieces before a needle is opened.

His book runs twelve weeks and he takes fewer pieces per month than anyone else here, because hatch density has to be drawn line by line rather than filled. He will quote the session count honestly, which is usually one more than clients hope.

Will take

  • Hatched and stippled work at forearm scale or larger
  • Botanical, anatomical and architectural subjects
  • Pieces where a printmaking reference is the starting point

Will not take

  • Hatch work smaller than a hand span, which fills in
  • Colour of any kind
  • Deadlines shorter than his book, ever
Engraving is a density problem. Put the lines too close and in eight years you have a grey shape where a drawing used to be — so I space for eight years.

Cover-ups and reworks are most of Wren’s book and all of her reputation. She takes the pieces other studios turn down, and she is the reason people travel to Oranienstraße from outside Berlin. Send daylight photographs with no filter, plus what the piece is and roughly when it was done.

She will also tell you when something cannot be covered. Some ink is too dark, too dense or too recent, and the honest answer is laser first and come back in a year — which is what she says several times a month instead of selling a black square.

Will take

  • Cover-ups of dark, dense or failed existing work
  • Reworks that keep part of the original
  • Scar work, once fully healed and settled

Will not take

  • Cover-ups of work done inside the last twelve months
  • Pieces the client wants hidden without being replaced
  • Anything she has told you needs laser first
Half of this job is telling someone their cover-up needs two laser sessions and a year before I touch it. That answer is free and it is usually the right one.

(04) — If you are not sure

Don't pick.
Describe it.

Most people choose the wrong resident from a name and a specialism. Send the enquiry without naming anyone and we will route it.

  1. 01

    Send it unaddressed

Placement, rough size in centimetres, three references and your budget ceiling. Leave the artist field blank. We read every enquiry as a floor, not as six inboxes, and the piece goes to the hand it actually fits.

  2. 02

We route it in four days

You get a named resident, a session count and a price, or a plain no. About one enquiry in five gets the no — usually because it wants a specialism nobody here has, in which case we name a studio that does.

  3. 03

    You can still say no

Being routed to a resident commits you to nothing. The consult is free and thirty minutes, and nothing is drawn and no deposit is taken until you have met the person who would be doing it.Free · 30 min · no deposit yet
